1 Pillow Tubing
A tubular cloth woven like a double cloth in the loom, but joined at the selvedges to produce a circular fabric. An average quality has 64 ends and 66 picks per inch, 28's warp, 32's weft, American yarns of good quality. The cloth is woven four ends in a dent, and from one shuttle. Two repeats of the weave are shown. Dots indicate the face threads lifted on face picks, x's show the back threads lifted on back picks, and black squares show all face ends lifted on back picks.

2 Cloth Stitch
The stitch used in pillow laces, consisting of interlacing the threads as is done in plain cloth weaving. -
3 pillowcase, also pillow slip

4 Covering Cloth
A soft, pure finished white cotton cloth used to cover the pillow, used for lace manufacture by hand. -
5 Bags (Tubular Cloths)
Pockets, pillow cases (see Pillow Cloth). Are all types of double cloths, usually woven with tappets, similar to Smalley's, or on a dobby loom. A special loom is now made for these fabrics. If one bag only is woven in the width, 4 healds are required; if several in the width, then 2 extra or 4 extra shafts would be needed to weave the plain between the bags. The warp requires special controlling, as greater tension is necessary when the bottom of the bag is being woven. A standard bag cloth is woven 96 X 96, 14's/14's, all American yams. This "gives 48 ends and picks in each fold. The bottom of the bag being woven by a special motion. Widths are 14-in. to about 24-in. 6 Linen
Cloth made of flax. The fabrication of linen in England was not carried on to any great extent before the middle of the 16th century. It was made here in the time of the Anglo-Saxons. Linen was worn as garments for wear next to the skin. In the 14th and 15th centuries much linen was imported from abroad, cloth of Lake, cloth of Rennes, cloth of Ypres and of Gaunt, being specially mentioned. The linen most commonly noticed during the Middle Ages for wear was known as " Holland," the cloth woven in that country, and the name has descended to the present day. In the reign of Charles II an act was passed for the encouragement of the manufacturing of all kinds of linen cloth and tapestry made from hemp or flax. Linen fabrics are manufactured in numerous qualities, bleached, dyed or in natural colour. The varieties of the plain weave fabrics are: - Cambrics, handkerchiefs, lawns, pillow cloth sheetings, hollands, canvas, duck dress linens, brown linens, aeroplane linens, interlinings, sailcloth, scrims, crash, roughs and dowlas. These fabrics differ considerably in setting and yarns. Fancy weave cloths comprise diapers, damasks, honeycombs, huckabacks, drills, towels, etc. All the above fabrics are imitated in cotton and many are cheapened by using cotton warp and flax weft. ———————— One of the oldest known fabrics is that made from flax yarn and called linen. The Egyptians thought linen was an emblem of purity, and used it as a wrapping for their dead. By the term linen is generally meant a medium weight cloth with plain weave, and one that takes the same standing in the linen trade as calico does in the cotton trade. -

11 Compound Fabrics
Fabrics in the construction of which more than one warp and one weft are used are termed " compound." A backed cloth is now called compound, although the real compound cloth is composed of two or more distinct cloths. Such fabrics as bags, pillow casing, etc., are compound. 12 Bolia Kanneo
The bed used by the high caste natives of the Maldive Islands is the most important article of furniture in the houses, in fact, it is almost the only one, and they are made as ornamental as possible. The Gottodic, or mattress, is cloth covered. The Bittdorhi Kanneo is the silk pillow for the back of the bed, the Bolia Kanneo the silk pillow for the right side, and the Fahlia Kanneo the silk pillow for the left side. Over these pillows is spread a beautiful ornamented mat of sedge fibre in black, white and pale-brown colours. -

A term used by home trade buyers for a plain cloth made from twofold warp and single weft, good quality yarns. The cloth is used for pillow cases, underwear, etc. Widths 341/2-in. to 36-in., 60 ends X 60 picks per inch, or 44 ends, one in a dent, and 72 picks; yarns 2/36's twist, 16's to 20's weft. The finished cloth is bleached and soft finished. All " double warps " are super qualities, giving strength and wear. The term does not mean two warps are used but simply a single warp of two-fold yarn. -

19 Braid Lace Work
Narrow laces made on the pillow in braid styles. They all have " runners " or threads that form straight lines along the length with various fancy stitches connecting these together. These braids are used in making guipure lace by connecting them together with brides; also much used as edgings, borders and ornament for dresses, children's garments, underwear, etc. The principal varieties are: - Cloth Braid - Resembles plain weave, has four pairs of straight lines with cross stitches joining them together. Cucumber Braid - Has two borders of four threads each connected with spaced stitches. Shadow Braid - The runners are crossed in diamond mesh. Hole Braid - Plain cloth stitch all through with small holes formed in the centre at intervals. Ladder Braid - There are two pairs of runners on one side, and one pair only on the other. Stitched together in ladder-like bars. Lattice Braid - Runners in five pairs, and stitched to form a lattice effect. Open Braid - Runners in two sets - at the sides, connected with spaced loops giving an open tape. -
